The Mystery of Dialogue by Friedrich G. Paff written in 2007 Elisabeth’s Year, September 11, in the coldness at night during a train’s delay translated by Karin Roth at Rosh haShanah 5768 within the silent sound of WITH At nighttime in the emptiness of a departure platform I suddenly begin to wonder our conversations when do they come off well formerly and today there here always and now Andrew, Johannes Mehmet, Jesus Sarah, Siddharta Yunkel, Fatma you and I baptism into dialogue immersion into streams of conversation to purify oneself from all those labels they only stick and don’t mean anything the devil’s temptation to say this here is an unalterable Truth the Golden Calf enclosed forever into stone and all along the roosters crow we are not angels but in the face of the least among us a distant Promised-Land enlightens us here he is not rejected amidst us we face him when we unseal ourselves when we don’t close ourselves the Next World begins just here within this moment when we turn our growing muteness into devotion this is to speak in thousand tongues about the very message holding so many narratives and always new potentials meaning does not exist prior but is arising always from our relationships you feel then you’re a human you act with modesty humility and gratefulness the agony you don’t try to escape from does not set you apart if you do not disrupt, border or block or insulate yourself and suddenly it’s here what one may refer to as sainthood spiritual or sacred or by the way quite banal a new attentiveness is turning toward you to sanctify the dust to see the one next to you not as a mirror or a picture not final but as future dialogue the miracle that there’s a glow a shiver a breaking out of stupor and suddenly the stone begins to flow swords turn into ploughshares fears into insights and all the suffocating forces become limpid walls open up were previously the terms were only caged into a coffin and like a present resurrection with all the venture with all hope I start to open up myself I start to trust greetings where previously were just averting eyes death does not have the final say we do have it beyond all death and call it love we look at the pulsating life that breathes, thumps we don’t deny the shadows the dissonances, paradoxes and we go through all this precisely because we face it we you and I that is the way we grow when we decide not to remain encapsulated any longer as severed I it’s the beginning of a salutation that passes deeply through us an eye that touches a word you tell me that emerges only because you say it you co-invent your answer that serves as question and impulse in turn to live through this to be not isolated any longer and to feel even lonesome we are one world now one conversation and one dialogue a you creates itself through dialogue vis-à-vis let us disrupt into a thousand facets the umbilical cord that ties us to the slavish chains of language chains that restrict only and freeze Language this is not an encyclopedia no dictionary of fears we are the language the mode we meet with one another our orthography is the openness a comma is the bridge this evening here and close to me a commuter at the departure platform where everybody rails against the frequently delay he gleams a new arrival if you’re inclined to look into the eyes of those who’re weary you realize what this very day refused to give something begins to bloom a new awakening it does not dissipate not any longer into body, spirit something between us flows and it emerges also throughout the difference through contradiction and through friction a thinking that walks through the gratings it opens us and frees us from our cages of all defense together we bring into being an enchantment because we give and we take at the same time if mutual we give all what we did refuse long time if mutual we break the muteness into mutual word-flows like honey and like wine in earthen flagons salt on our lips a word begins to blow just now you toss it to me or I toss it to you it lightens the world it opens our view it’s also a spark within the ashes come closer to me how to say it with skin or hair with eyes or words do you know the secret of dialogue: nearness is the distance of Paradise |
